Hospital at Night Team

1. What does the team do/what are they responsible for?

In January 2009 the hospital at night team came to fruition, to achieve safe and effective clinical care at night. The Hospital at Night Team has been established as a multidisciplinary team with the full range of skills and competencies to provide a safe and effective service overnight. (Hospital at night handbook, 2008). It is this concept that ensures effective clinical care is delivered at the right time, by the right health care professional with the appropriate skills and competencies required to meet the needs of the patient.

From the site coordinator role, to the response to all clinical queries; the team are present and supportive to the surgical and medical wards within Central Manchester Foundation Trust, also will support all adult cardiac arrests across the entire site as trained advanced life support providers. The team each attend both Surgical and Medical handovers ensuring they have an overview of all acutely unwell patients and their plan of care. Multidisciplinary team working is crucial to the smooth running of the H@N service. Effective communication between the teams is paramount to ensure the service is delivered safely and effectively.

2. Who’s in the team?

The team consists of four band 7, six band 6 and three band 2 nurses, who work 7 nights a week without exception. The coordination and support of the medical teams is a large aspect of the H@N work and effective team working is essential.

3. What projects are you currently working on?

As always we strive to support the ward teams overnight with any issues that they encounter. We aim to support the ward nursing and medical teams to deliver a high quality care to ensure that the service the patient receives is as it should be throughout the 24 hour period. The team have recently introduced an electronic data capture to ensure that all jobs can be audited and feedback to the divisions and their website will be launched later this month.

4. How do I contact the team?

Between 20:40 and 07:45 the team can be contacted via switch on bleep 8888 for the triage nurses or bleep 2677 for the senior nurse in charge.

For other enquiries they are all on trust email and for management issues Sarah Ingleby is available on 0161-901- 1702.
